The Pell Grant award amount is determined by the EFC score. Each student that fills out a FAFSA form will receive an EFC score. Again, EFC is short for Expected Family Contribution, which is a score that determines the financial strength of the student’s family. The higher the EFC score, the more a student’s family is expected to pay for their child’s education. To qualify for a Pell Grant, a student must demonstrate significant financial need. The National Post-Secondary Aid Study found that students from families making less than $41,000 accounted for 90% of Pell Grant recipients.
